Complete clean sweep for Cambridge at ̽��ֱ��Boat Race 2025

Thousands of spectators lined the banks of the River Thames on 13 April to witness a dramatic afternoon of action, with millions more following live on the BBC.

Cambridge Women secured their eighth consecutive win in the 79th Women’s Boat Race, extending their overall record to 49 victories to Oxford’s 30. ̽��ֱ��Men’s crew, too, were victorious in defending their title in the 170th edition of the event, notching up their 88th win, with Oxford sitting on 81.

Goldie, the Cambridge Men’s Reserve Crew, won the Men’s Reserve Race, while Blondie, the Cambridge Women’s Reserve Crew, won the Women’s Reserve Race. And the day before, the 2025 Lightweight Boat Race also saw two wins for Cambridge.

Cambridge’s Claire Collins said it was an incredible feeling to win the race.

“This is so cool, it’s really an incredible honour to share this with the whole club,” she said.

̽��ֱ��Women’s Race was stopped initially after an oar clash, but Umpire Sir Matthew Pinsent allowed the race to resume after a restart. Claire said that the crew had prepared for eventualities such as a restart and so were able to lean on their training when it happened.

“I had total confidence in the crew to regroup. Our focus was to get back on pace and get going as soon as possible and that’s what we did.”

For Cambridge Men’s President Luca Ferraro, it was his final Boat Roat campaign, having raced in the Blue Boat for the last three years, winning the last two.

He said: “It was a great race. ̽��ֱ��guys really stepped up. That’s something that our Coach Rob Baker said to us before we went out there, that each of us had to step up individually and come together and play our part in what we were about to do. I couldn’t be prouder of the guys, they really delivered today.”

Professor Deborah Prentice, Vice-Chancellor of the ̽��ֱ�� of Cambridge, congratulated all the crews following the wins.

“I am in awe of these students and what they have achieved, and what Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Boat Club has been able to create,” she said.

“These students are out in the early hours of the morning training and then trying to make it to 9am lectures. It’s so inspiring. And a complete clean sweep – this was an incredibly impressive showing by Cambridge, I am so proud of them.”

̽��ֱ��Cambridge Blue Boats featured student athletes drawn from Christ’s College, Downing College, Emmanuel College, Gonville & Caius, Hughes Hall, Jesus College, Pembroke College, Peterhouse, St Edmund’s, and St John’s.

Cambridge is celebrating a complete clean sweep at ̽��ֱ��Boat Race 2025, with victories in all 4 openweight races and also both lightweight races.

With just over 2 weeks to go until the showdown on the River Thames, the Light Blues are gearing up to defend their titles. Cambridge leads the historic tally in both the men’s and women’s events and will be looking to extend their dominance when they take on Oxford on Sunday 13 April 2025.

Countdown to ̽��ֱ��Boat Race 2025
̽��ֱ��prestigious race, one of the oldest amateur sporting events in the world, will take place along the 6.8 km Championship Course from Putney to Mortlake. ̽��ֱ��Women's Boat Race will commence at 1:21pm British Summer Time (BST), followed by the Men's Boat Race at 2:21pm BST.

Cambridge’s women’s crew enters the race as the defending champions and currently leads the overall tally at 48-30. Meanwhile, Cambridge’s men’s crew also holds the advantage, leading Oxford 87-81, with one historic dead heat in 1877.

Praise for the athletes

Siobhan Cassidy, Chair of ̽��ֱ��Boat Race Company, congratulated the athletes on their selection for one of the Blue Boats. “I am not sure that everyone appreciates just what it takes to compete at this level,” she told the event.

“Having witnessed the intense training over a number of years, I can tell you these guys are no ordinary students; they combine their academic courses with a high-performance rowing programme. Their commitment to excellence on and off the water is truly extraordinary. It is nothing short of superhuman.”

Renowned BBC Sport commentator Andrew Cotter, who hosted the event, emphasised the purity of ̽��ֱ��Boat Race in today’s sporting landscape. “In the modern era of sport, when so much is inflated by money and professionalism, this is sport stripped back to its essence,” he said.

“It is pure competition, it is about winning and losing. And I know that’s how the athletes feel about it, but they also feel that this is where they will make friendships that will last a lifetime.”

Historic firsts and environmental commitments

This year’s event will also see a landmark moment in Boat Race history. Sarah Winckless MBE will become the first woman to umpire the Men’s Boat Race on the Championship Course. Sir Matthew Pinsent CBE will oversee the Women’s Boat Race.

Additionally, ̽��ֱ��Boat Race Company, alongside the Cambridge and Oxford ̽��ֱ�� Boat Clubs, have given their support to the London Rivers’ Pledge, a 10-year environmental initiative focused on improving water quality and sustainability on the Thames and beyond.

With the crews now announced and excitement continuing to build, all eyes will be on the Thames this April as Cambridge and Oxford prepare to write the next chapter in their historic rivalry.

Cambridge dominates a weekend of varsity sport

It was an exceptional weekend of sport between Cambridge and Oxford ̽��ֱ�� which saw Cambridge win five out of six sporting fixtures. ̽��ֱ��Light Blues won the 141st men’s Varsity Rugby Match on Saturday, followed by ̽��ֱ��Boat Race on Sunday where Cambridge won the 77th Women’s Race, the 168th Men’s Race and both Reserve races.

Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� RUFC men’s team dug deep at Twickenham on Saturday 25 March to deny Oxford a hat-trick of victories. ̽��ֱ��Cambridge Light Blues, led by Jamie Benson, took the match 15-10 to extend the winning head-to-head record in the fixture to 65-62.

̽��ֱ��following day, ̽��ֱ��Boat Race was dominated by Cambridge, who comprehensively won all four races along ̽��ֱ��Championship Course on the River Thames, London.

̽��ֱ��Cambridge Women’s crew took victory by four-and-a-quarter lengths, making it a sixth straight win for the women's team.

̽��ֱ��men’s crew held off a late charge from Oxford to win by just over a length for their fourth victory in the past five races.

Cambridge lead the rivalry 47-30 in the women's event, while Cambridge men have won 86 times to Oxford's 81.

Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� RUFC women’s were defeated in the Varsity Rugby Match for the first time since 2016 with a 31-12 loss against their Oxford counterparts at Twickenham. They had racked up wins in 2017, 2018 and 2019 before last year’s meeting between the rivals ended in a first ever draw, meaning Cambridge successfully defended the title.

̽��ֱ��36 crew members who have won a coveted place in their 'Blue Boat' were announced at an event, hosted by sports broadcaster Andrew Cotter and held at Apothecaries' Hall, Blackfriars. ̽��ֱ��Blue Boat is the name given to the top crew from each university whose members win the coveted Light Blue colour of Cambridge, or Dark Blue of Oxford.

̽��ֱ��crew for Cambridge are all members of, and selected by, Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Boat Club (CUBC). Patrick Ryan is the Chief Coach for the women's crew and Rob Baker is Chief Coach for the men's.

̽��ֱ��Boat Race will take place on Sunday 26 March, on what is known as ' ̽��ֱ��Championship Course' and stretches four miles between Putney and Mortlake on the River Thames. The 77th Women’s Boat Race begins at 4pm. ̽��ֱ��168th Men’s Boat Race begins at 5pm.

Official crews for the BNY Mellon Boat Race and the Newton Women's Boat Race announced

̽��ֱ��161st Boat Race will see a younger Oxford crew take on a Cambridge crew who weighed in an average of 5.25kg per man heavier.

As well as weight, the Light Blue crew also has height and Boat Race experience on its side, with an average advantage of just over 5cm per man and an additional returning Blue.

Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Women’s Boat Club will take a marginal weight advantage into ̽��ֱ��2015 Newton Women’s Boat Race of 0.9kg per athlete.

Oxford ̽��ֱ�� Women’s Boat Club hold a height advantage of a little over 3cm per athlete, boosted by Olympic Champion Caryn Davies at nearly 6 foot 3 inches.

Both Oxford crews feature a range of international athletes, with four nations in total represented between the two crews.

In the Men’s Blue Boat, the O’Connor brothers from New Zealand and Tom Swartz, Michael Di Santo and William Hakim from America back up the British athletes William Geffin, Henry Goodier, James Cook and Constantine Louloudis.

̽��ֱ��Women’s Boat mainly consists of American and British athletes, with an addition of Swiss born Nadine Graedel Iberg in 5 seat.

Caryn Davies, who will be the most decorated Olympian to compete in either of ̽��ֱ��Boat Races having won a silver and two golds at the Athens, Beijing and London Olympic Games, will sit in the stroke seat.

In comparison to the 2014 Cambridge Women’s crew, this year’s Blue Boat boasts a variety of different nationalities, with Canadian Ashton Brown, Americans Daphne Martschenko and Rosemary Ostfeld and Fanny Belais of France. Once again,

Ian Middleton has secured his coxing seat in the Cambridge Men’s Blue Boat, joined by fellow Brit William Warr in the 5 seat.

Henry Hoffstot returns as stroke, supported by fellow Americans and returning Blues Luke Juckett, Matthew Jackson and first-time Blue Ben Ruble.

Stiff competition has meant that a number of returning Blues have been unable to regain their places for ̽��ֱ��2015 BNY Mellon Boat Races.

However, across the 4 clubs there are still 16 returning Blues. OUBC have selected 4 Blues from last year: Tom Swartz, Michael Di Santo, Sam O’Connor and Constantine Louloudis. Opposite them will be Luke Juckett, Matthew Jackson, Joshua Hooper, Henry Hoffstott and Ian Middleton returning to the Cambridge Blue Boat.

From ̽��ֱ��2014 Newton Womens Boat Race, the Oxford ̽��ֱ�� Womens Boat Club have selected Maxie Scheske, Lauren Kedar and Nadine Graedel Iberg and this year’s President Anastasia Chitty.

Returning for Cambridge will be Melissa Wilson, Claire Watkins and President Caroline Reid.

Olympian row-past memorial to late Boat Race rower

Toby Wallace rowed in the Goldie crew in the 1996 Boat Race and then the victorious Blue Boat in 1998 and 1999.

Tragically Toby died after a collision with a lorry in Cornwall as he was beginning a cycle ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

At Noon tomorrow, a Memorial service for Toby will take place in Jesus College Chapel.

Following the service at around 2.45pm, members of his three CUBC crews will perform a row past in his memory. ̽��ֱ��crew of 7 plus cox Vian Sharif (Blue 99) will contain 4 Olympic athletes; Marc Weber, Kieran West MBE, Graham Smith and Alex Story.

̽��ֱ��5 seat will be left empty in Toby’s Memory (his seat in the 1998 Boat Race, the crew of which still hold the course record of 16 minutes, 19 seconds).

Another crew member is Theo Brun (Jesus 96), Goldie 97 & 98, who two years ago cycled back to his parent’s home in Norfolk, from Hong Kong.

̽��ֱ��trip which was called ‘As Far as East is East’ and raised significant amounts of money for a few charities, including the Harry Mahon Cancer Trust which was set up in memory of the legendary Cambridge Coach. Harry coached all the crew members in this memorial eight.

Four Olympians will be in a specially formulated crew of Cambridge ̽��ֱ�� Boat Club veterans which will row past Goldie Boathouse tomorrow (Saturday 23 November) in tribute to a former fellow crew member.

Cambridge the heavyweights at Boat Race weigh-in

̽��ֱ��average weight for the Cambridge crew was 96.3kg and a total weight of 770.4kg excluding the cox. Oxford weighed in with an average weight of 88.4kg and a total weight of 707kg.

̽��ֱ��heaviest oarsman in this year’s Race will also be in the Cambridge crew. American Steve Dudek – rowing in his first Boat Race having spent the last four years competing for the ̽��ֱ�� of Wisconsin – weighed in at 109.6kg.

Oxford’s British bowman, Alex Woods, is the lightest crew member on either side, tipping the scales at a mere 77.8kg.

̽��ֱ��two coxswains Zoe de Toledo and Ed Bosson weighed in at 49.6kg and 55.6kg respectively. Zoe will have to carry additional weight in the boat on Race day to reach the minimum requirement for coxswains of 55kg.
