Applicants are invited for a ֱ̽ of Cambridge ’‘Going Further’ summer school from July 17 to 20. Aimed at mature students (21 and over) and those thinking of returning to education, the programme focuses on arts and humanities subjects.

Applicants do not necessarily have to be already on a pre-university course but must be seriously considering returning to full-time study. All tuition, food and accommodation costs (and travel in certain cases), are covered.

ֱ̽Going Further summer school, now in its sixth year, aims to give participants a taste of study at university level, a chance to sample Cambridge-style teaching of arts and humanities, and information about preparing to apply and making an application.

Past participants include Esther Silva (pictured above with daughter Lucy), who dropped out of her A levels at the age of 18, and returned to college after three years working in office and admin jobs in and around her home town of Bradford in West Yorkshire.

Esther signed up for an Access course at Bradford College when she realised that she needed to fulfil her academic potential. She leapt on the chance to take part in the Going Further course to see whether it would be feasible to combine full-time study with raising a child.

As a direct result of the programme she applied to Lucy Cavendish College to read law, and is just completing her first year.

“ ֱ̽month before I started my degree I did a “Prep” course for mature students, offered free by Cambridge over two weekends. It gave a really useful insight into life as a Cambridge student and what would be expected,” she says.

Combining studying with bringing up a three-year-old is a challenge. “Organisation is the key. If I know what I’m doing, and Lucy knows what she is doing, then we are fine. She’s settled in brilliantly at her nursery school and has lots of friends,” she says.

Esther applied to Lucy Cavendish College because she liked the atmosphere of a women’s college, the diversity of the student population and the lovely surroundings. She has found the environment extremely supportive and Lucy has been happily assimilated into college life.

ֱ̽deadline for applications for the Going Further summer school is June 1. For information and an application form go to the link above right.
